OVERVIEW OF
THE SITUATION:

home_sport_heading_sep

For several years now, civilians in Eastern Ghouta and many other areas in Syria have been living under stringent military siege imposed by the Syrian regime and its allies. Civilians, civilian objects, services, and facilities have been indiscriminately and intentionally targeted by the Regime forces, causing among other difficulties a critical shortage of food, medical supplies, medicines, and basic living necessities and services. Following the recent escalation against the towns and villages of Eastern Ghouta on February, hundreds of thousands of civilians, including 115,000 children have been forced to flee to residential basements, many of which lack the very basic means of life. Due to constant and targeted heavy shelling, it is now impossible for any of those civilians to leave the basements in order to seek food or other necessities for themselves and their families.

SHAML REPORT

home_sport_heading_sep

This tragic situation has led SHAML Coalition, Hurras Network, and other Syrian civil society organizations, to conduct this enquiry that aims to assess and explore the basic needs of the civilians in Eastern Ghouta, while recognizing of course that those needs barely cover the very minimum human requirements and necessities. We have therefore prepared this report to examine the best approach to provide these materials in a planned and rationalized manner according to the needs and order of importance. We also sought to conduct general statistics on refugee numbers, age groups, needs, shelter conditions and all other information that would be useful to donors when they address this humanitarian crisis.

Solidarity campaign with #EasternGhouta in UWC Maastricht, Netherlands. Thanks to everyone who participated in this campaign. ----- 13 days. 673 deaths. 400 000 civilians under siege. As we are progressing into 2018, the Syrian conflict is entering its 8th year. Since February 18, the Syrian government, aided by the Russian forces, has been leading a widespread offensive in Eastern Ghouta, a region east of Damascus that is home to 400 000 people who remain under siege since 2012. In 13 days, over 670 people have died and are continuing to die, with almost no access to medical aid, food or water. Hospitals are targeted by continuing airstrikes and the death toll rises by the minute. On Saturday (24 Feb.) evening, the UN passed a resolution for a 30-day ceasefire in #Ghouta that would stop the bombs and allow humanitarian access. On the Monday after alone, more than 29 people have died, chlorine gas has been dropped on a residential area and medical centers have been struck. Looking at the situation, the community of UWC Maastricht has decided not to remain silent any longer and is stepping up to demand action. 55 students and staff members from 41 different countries have decided to be part of this project and to stand up for the people of Ghouta. The conflict in Syria is not over. We are asking you not to remain silent. Speak up, for you can. #SaveGhouta Photography: © Lidia Paladini

VOICES OF
THE BESIEGED:

what it makes it more painful that the person responsible for your death, the person you resisted with your words and work for seven years, this person took our homelands, he occupied it, celebrated and danced while he kicked us out and we remained without a homeland or a country, But your rights won’t be forgotten and one day we will hold accountable those who were responsible

BESIEGED DREAMS REPORT

Realizing the importance of the academic education pursuit by al Ghouta Campaign, we conducted a survey on university students from Eastern Ghouta who have been recently forcibly displaced to the North of Syria. We analyzed the findings of the questionnaire aiming to prepare this report to shed light on the impact of siege, persistent bombing, repeated displacement and forced displacement on the education reality, and the resulted challenges that hamper the students’ educational progress, hoping to find solutions for these challenges and improve the education status.
